Foam City
Computational Design Proposal for a Floating Settlement
City as Foam
With rising sea levels changing paradigms to urban design, this speculative computational design project based on the concept of ‘City as Foam’ posits a network of floating islands as ecospheres of living in a post-climate change world.
A Voronoi diagram was used to generate plots, categorized by use: Residential, Public, Vacant, Null.
Spatial Organization
Using a design by search algorithm, a ‘path of best fit’ selects all plots to be included in a given settlement. Bubbles are then added along the path according to use and desired urban density.
By taking the concept of foam and localizing it to a chosen site - Bangkok City, Thailand - this project explores how an ‘organically and sustainably growing’ city can develop along the Gulf of Thailand.
